I can’t stop using this expression. It is so much fun. I first heard it as “Totes ma goats, it’s cray-cray adorbs” in this Sprint commercial with James Earl Jones and Malcolm McDowell speaking like teenage girls. According to Urban Dictionary, totes ma goats is “slang for totally, used between full grown men in a bro-mantic relationship, to convey their excitement to a suggestion. Made popular by Paul Rudd’s character in I Love You, Man.” I have a not-so-secret crush on Paul Rudd, but for some reason I never saw this movie. (An error I will soon remedy.) Here’s the scene: …

May it be a prosperous and happy year for all of you. If you need some help reaching your writing goals, the “Jane’s” over at See Jane Publish are spending all of January talking about goal setting and planning. We’re even challenging each other by specifying what we’ll do if we don’t reach our goals. My post won’t be up until January 16, but Gina Fluharty kicks off the month with an awesome post tomorrow (Jan 2). I’ll remind you of my post as we get closer to the date. The Janes are having a lot of fun during the month of December. We’re all spinning stories about a moo cow creamer. Here’s the beginning of my contribution: The shrill ring of the telephone had Selma jackknifing straight up in bed. Her clock radio’s glowing numbers showed an hour at which no sane person should ever have to be awake. In honor of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), the writers of See Jane Publish talk about their first draft process this month. Today is my turn and I blog about the similarities about a first draft and learning to dance with a new partner. What type of dance does your first draft process resemble? Come on over and join the discussion. I love National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), because I finished my very first manuscript by signing up for NaNo many years ago. Since then, I’ve finished quite a few first drafts. Writing a new story is like learning to …

It’s time for my inaugural post at See Jane Publish. In honor of Halloween month October, all the Janes are writing about scary things in writing and publishing. Hop on over to see what terrifies me. I’m on my way toward becoming a professional writer, an author. I know this because I’ve measured success one rejection letter at a time. Slowly—oh so slowly—the responses to my queries went from no reply to form reply to personalized rejection to editorial feedback. And then, I arrived in that magical place where agents and editors wanted to read my first three chapters. Some …
