In Love with a New Library

by Asa Maria Bradley

I’m visiting my family in Sweden for a couple of weeks. The country is experiencing a heat wave and it is either hot and sunny or hot and muggy every day. Homes here do not have air conditioning, but I’ve found an awesome spot on my parents’ back patio that’s in the shade for most of the day. My mom’s quite the gardener, so I enjoy her flowers while working in this corner.

Sometimes, even that lovely shaded table gets to be too hot and I instead move to the local library, a mere two minutes of walking down the road. There’s something special about libraries. I love the smell of well read books, the hushed conversations–and in this fabulous library—the coffee and cake which can be had for a nominal fee.

I had to get a library card to be able to connect to the internet and am deliriously happy to once again be able to check out books in a Swedish library. I’ve always been a book worm, drilling my way from spine to spine even at an early age. The local library of the small village in which I grew up had special rules for me during their summer reading challenge. Everyone else got a free book for every ten they borrowed and read. After I cashed in on five new books one summer, my limit was three per summer.

The best thing about having a Swedish library card again is that I can now borrow e-books in Swedish even while in the States. I have a small library of books in Swedish and my family knows it’s the best gift possible for birthdays and Christmas. But now I’ll be able to browse and choose as I like. And read new books when they come out and while all my friends back home are still talking about them.

They have a great selection of books, fun and friendly librarians, and as I mentioned before, COFFEE AND CAKE for a nominal fee. What’s next? Chocolate and wine in the library? I would never leave.

Do you have a favorite library?

I definitely think that good and friendly librarians has more to do with a good library than the building itself.

I loved the library at Golden West College. Besides a great atmosphere, the librarians’ desks all had signs that said: ‘Come talk to me even if I look busy. Helping you isn’t an interruption of my work, it is my work.’ No wonder the place had such good vibes.
