Free Book Day: Kira Brady’s HEARTS OF DARKNESS

by Asa Maria Bradley

HeartsOfDarknessIf you haven’t read Kira Brady’s amazing debut novel, you are really missing out. But, here’s your chance to get your life back on track and win a signed copy.

I read this book in one sitting. The plot, the characters, the world building had me completely enthralled and I can’t wait for the other two books of this dark paranormal trilogy to be released.

In HEARTS OF DARKNESS, the people of Seattle use biofuels and diesel engines not because they’re ecologically aware, but because the Aether—ghosts on the wrong side of the Gate of the Land of the Dead—interfere with normal gasoline engines.  The wraiths, shifters, and humans of the coastal city live in a world about to be ripped apart as ancient Norse and Native American mythology battle for control of the world. The two main characters, human nurse Kayla and werewolf mercenary Hart, are sizzling. And, I’ve already picked out my favorite secondary characters—the ones I want to have their own stories in the subsequent books. (Keeping my fingers crossed.)

We’re extra lucky today, because Kira stopped by for a short interview!

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten? How did it taste?

Fresh tofu. The entire restaurant in Tokyo was fresh bean curd and tofu. It all tasted like it was designed for babies and toothless people. I can’t recommend it.

If you could pick your own mentor, who would she or he be and why?

I’d probably pick one of my favorite authors, maybe Ilona Andrews or Meljean Brook. I’ve met Meljean, and she’s super sweet. They both write books I adore.

What is your favorite escape place and/or how do you combat stress?

The first change can be seen in the prescription viagra uk reviews on several websites. It also helps in the maintenance of the sildenafil 100mg tab erection moments so as to help in providing harder erection and a complete response to the stimulated signals. Our life is so hectic that we don’t have time or the manpower to put eight cialis 40 mg people in a loving relationship union. Despite its origin viagra mastercard appalachianmagazine.com being unknown, psoriasis has some known precipitating factors.

I’m not so good at stress. I like to escape to the woods and go hiking. Nature reminds me of the important things in life–which rarely have to do with what I’m usually stressed about. I also like to read, if I’m not too stressed to concentrate. Between the pages of a book lie a thousand adventures and other lifetimes. There is no better escape!

If you were to cast HEARTS OF DARKNESS, who would play your main characters?

Kayla: Rashida Jones
Hart: Hugh Jackman
Sven Norgard: Chris hemsworth

What are you working on now and when can we read it?

I’m racing to finish Deadglass #3, Hearts of Chaos, which is scheduled to be out February 2014. After that? I have no idea. 😉

Based on Kira’s casting suggestions, I’m really looking forward to the movie. However, you don’t have to wait for HEART OF DARKNESS to hit the big screen. Run out and by the book now, or leave a comment below and you’re automatically entered to win a signed copy of the novel. The contest will run until Tuesday October 23, 10 pm Pacific Time.

Just to show you one more time why you don’t want to miss out on this novel, here’s the blurb:

Nurse Kayla Friday has dedicated her life to science and reason. But for her, Seattle is a place of eerie loss and fragmented, frightening memories. And now the only clue to her sister’s murder reveals a secret battle between two ancient mythologies…and puts Kayla in the sights of lethally-sexy werewolf mercenary Hart. He’ll do whatever it takes to obtain the key to the Gate of the Land of the Dead and free what’s left of his soul. But seducing the determined Kayla is putting them at the mercy of powerful desires neither can control. And as the clock ticks down to hellish catastrophe, the untested bond between Kayla and Hart may lead to the ultimate sacrifice.

The internet locked me out for a day, probably because I spend too much time here. Sorry for the late contest result. Random.org picked Anthea as our lucky winner. Yay!

Anthea, I’ll be contacting you via email for your address.

Thanks for joining me! I haven’t read American Gods, though I own a copy. It’s been in my TBR pile for a looong time. I’ve always loved studying world mythology and I enjoy books that combine the old tales with the modern world. In Seattle (where I grew up), the two largest mythological traditions are of the local Native American tribes and the Scandinavian immigrants who built the city. I was inspired by stories of the wild west founding of Seattle and the conflict between the newcomers and the people who had lived here for generations. It made sense to me to pit their two mythological traditions against each other. Both have shapeshifter characters. The Kivati are loosely based on the Giant Animal people who could shift between human and animal form, and the Drekar are loosely based on Norse dragons. I was also inspired by a quote from Chief Seattle in which he said, “The Dead are not powerless. Dead, did I say? There is no death, only a change of worlds.” I envisioned a gate between the land of the living and the land of the dead that is bursting at the seams, with ghosts spilling through to disrupt technology and electricity.
I would also LOVE to see a movie that pits Wolverine and Thor! (As long as Kristin Stewart stays far, far away from it!)
Thanks for having me!

Neil Gaiman brought Norse mythology to North America in American Gods, and your book sounds like the answer to the logical follow-up question: How do the ancient gods here react to being invaded?

Did Neil Gaiman’s book inspire you? If not, how did you come up with the idea of pitting these two mythologies against each other?
