Contest Update

by Asa Maria Bradley

OTFS_2012_FinalistJust found out I came in second in the “On the Far Side” contest. It’s always better to be a winner, of course, but I am so happy to be a finalist that the silver medal seems like even more cherries on top of an already amazing sundae.

The editor who judged my category gave great feedback. She basically said she liked everything about the story: the pacing, the characters, the writing, but gave it a second place because she’s not a fan of mixing mythology with futuristic elements. (My story is about a genetically enhanced heroine who gets entangled with a group of immortal Vikings and Valkyries after saving their king.)

Being passed over because of a personal choice isn’t something I can change by working on my craft or story. Unless I want to change the whole story premise, which I don’t. So, onward to find an agent and editor who love a marriage between Norse mythology and nanotechnology.

Another thing the editor mentioned is that she found the story too influenced by the recent Hollywood version of Thor. This is a complete coincidence since I haven’t actually seen the movie and watched Avengers only a week ago. Obviously, I need to mention my Swedish background when I query this book, in case other publishing professionals draw parallels between Chris Hemsworth and my book.

ThorActually, scratch that. I’m okay with my writing being associated with sexy Mr. Hemsworth. 🙂

But, I will still mention in the query that I’m Swedish and that Norse mythology wasn’t just taught in school, it was present in the historical rune stones, buried Viking ships, and weapon artifacts that littered the landscape around my village.

The fact that an American, comments our Viking heritage and then consider nanotechnology, valkyrias and Vikings has not a connection. I see it as likely that if I were to say that Wagner did not write Realtime operas ……
Hmmm who was it who discovered America? An Italian resident in Portugal or Leif Eriksson, son of Erik the Red, who is believed to have come from our region Denmark / South of Sweden

Thanks for having my back, lillebror. 🙂

In the editors defense, she didn’t know anything about me. She only read the pages I had written and had no bio and so didn’t know I was from Sweden. I met her at a conference and thanked her for the read. When she heard I was Scandinavian, she said she’d read the book completely differently.

“I’m a sassy Swede from Texas, now living in the wilds of the Northwest.”

I’m so using that! I used to have a website and a blog called Sassy Swede. I took it down because everyone that came to visit was disappointed there weren’t more porn on the site. 🙂

I started the queries but then got some great feedback from an editor (who passed) and an author. Now I’m completely revising the middle to make the book better. Once it is “all that it can be,” I’ll send it out to people who have already requested it.
