When Practicality Trumps Romance

by Asa Maria Bradley

doggieWe didn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day in Sweden while I grew up. (They do now, but that’s more a phenomenon of Hallmark than a national holiday.) So, I didn’t experience the true meaning of February 14 until I came to the US to go to high school for a year and ended up staying much longer.

Before I got married, I would like the holiday if I was in a relationship and not really think about it if I wasn’t. Unless I had just gone through a bad breakup or thought the time between boyfriends lagged on. In those situations I’d feel unloved and unwanted on February 14.

The strange thing is that I don’t have a clear memory of something special I did with a former boyfriend to celebrate Valentine’s. (Which makes me feel guilty because several of my exes went out of their way to make me feel special on that day.) I do however have lots of memories of fun stuff I did with other single girlfriends on that day.

One year I camped out on the wilderness for the whole weekend with five other girls. We went hiking, spent lazy afternoons reading books while sunbathing, and celebrated each evening with lots of wine and a bonfire. Another year I went out dancing with seven girls and the challenge was that we had to stay until the clubs closed, which was 4 am in the city we lived in at the time, and not get picked up by a guy. Several of my friends were very pretty, so it was a challenged for them, but they persevered and stayed with the rest of the group to keep the sisterhood alive.

I’d like to think I’m a romantic, but it seems like I would have more couple memories of the national holiday of love if I was.

My husband and I kind of celebrate Valentine’s. We don’t give each other gifts or cards, but we usually go out to dinner. We avoid restaurants on the actual day, but might go the day before or after. I think I’m going to have to face that I might be a romantic in my fiction, but in real life practicality trumps romance.
This year we’re going out with a big group of friends on the day after and I’m really looking forward to it. We’re getting a hotel room downtown so that we can stay out all night, dancing and drinking wine. Hopefully there won’t be any bonfires at the end of the evening.

What’s your favorite way of celebrating Valentine’s?

Tesa, It sounds like you liked making everyone happy on Valentine’s.

Holly, I like how you and Jeff celebrate the big day of love. Not much pressure and not much money spent. 🙂

Jere’, Spending Valentine’s with you is always fun. Spending any time with you is always fun!

I have no real memory of romantic valentine days. I may have blocked them out since I am a terrible judge of the male species for boyfriends. I had more fun with hanging out with pals too. We hung out a few when Mike was traveling for work. I like 15 Feb: 1/2 price candy and chocolate day. Mmm sweetheart candy is better when it is a quarter.

Yes, that’s the thing about good old Valentine’s Day. It’s fine when you’re with someone and sucks when you’re not. It’s like everywhere in the world is throwing it in your face–you can’t ignore, can’t escape. On Mother’s Day, I try to shield my husband from all the ads everywhere and reminders…that his mother is no longer with us…but I can’t. I hate it. Valentine’s Day celebration: I like listening to You Tube song videos with my husband. We take turns finding one we like and playing it for each other.

Sounds like you’ll have a great time! My favorite memories are actually as a child and the illusion of romance:) card boxes decorated with red crepe paper, white lace. Making out cards for all mt classmates, baking sugar cookies and topping them with frosting and sprinkles.
