Just caught up on my favorite cartoon site, xkcd.com, and laughed my butt off.
This one summarized exactly how I feel about ratings on book purchasing sites. I’ll read actual reviews, but don’t pay much attention to the star ratings. I’m very suspicious of any book that has a very low rating, or a very high rating. Either someone’s out to get the author, or all his/hers friends reviewed it.

This one made me think about the ongoing debate in the romance world about whether a book is sweet, sexy, steamy, or erotica. I enjoy all of those genres as long as they are well written and there’s not too much “sketchiness.”
Hope you are having a good Wednesday. I’m spending mine writing at my favorite coffee shop while the car is at a service appointment. Then I’m off to get a massage before writing some more. School starts on Monday and I have to get as many words as possible on the page before it’s time for lesson plans and grading.

Jere’, I read Anne Rice as a teenager. I loved the first couple of vampire books (the Sleeping Beauty Series was a little too much for me. I stopped reading the vampires after a scene involving a woman on her period and a vampire and oral sex. 🙂 Love her witches books though, but again, got a little weird after the first few.
Rebecca, the massage turned out not to be very relaxing after the shop didn’t got my car finished on time and I had to rush to the appointment without my car while figuring out how to get back and get my car. I’m still tense about it! 🙂 I love how you measure the arrival of a book by both the low and the high rating.
Virginia, That’s one of the reasons I’ve always paid more attention to the written comments than the stars.
I’ve been suspicious of the 5-star over the top review for a while….and I’m not the only one. Book buyers aren’t complete fools. Sadly, if you give a book an honest four-star rating and sincere, good review, you’ll get your head bitten off by the author-‘why not 5 stars!’ Live and learn….
Great post! And I’m totally jealous you’re off writing and getting massaged today. 🙂 I always sigh in relief when I get the first 5 star review…and the first 1 star review. Then I forget about it.
Hahaha! I love the use of the word “sketchy,” If I did a erotica line, it would be from “slight worthy of a sigh” to “gag worthy” Read Anne Rice’s erotica and vampire series and you will understand. I still have scenes that pop into my head and you can hear an audible “Argh! Gross, get out!” 🙂
