Wow! Time flies when you’re having fun and sometimes you neglect your own blog because you’re too busy playing on other websites and at conferences. I just returned home from an amazing few days at the American Writers & Writers Program (AWP) conference in Seattle. I graduated from Eastern Washington University with an MFA in creative writing (non fiction) back in 2010. For the first time, the university sponsored a reception for current students and alumni during the conference. It was so much fun meeting up with old friends who are now scattered all over the states in different jobs, …

I recently read an article on PolyMic about recommendations for cities other than New York for creative twenty-something to consider as their home town. This got me thinking about whether or not where you live determines how creative you are. On Bark today, I reminisce about where I have lived and where I was the most creative. I also suggest additions to PolyMic‘s top five cities list. If you want to see where I think creative people should live and whether or not location determined how productive of a writer I was in the past, head on over to Bark. …

I can’t stop using this expression. It is so much fun. I first heard it as “Totes ma goats, it’s cray-cray adorbs” in this Sprint commercial with James Earl Jones and Malcolm McDowell speaking like teenage girls. According to Urban Dictionary, totes ma goats is “slang for totally, used between full grown men in a bro-mantic relationship, to convey their excitement to a suggestion. Made popular by Paul Rudd’s character in I Love You, Man.” I have a not-so-secret crush on Paul Rudd, but for some reason I never saw this movie. (An error I will soon remedy.) Here’s the scene: …

May it be a prosperous and happy year for all of you. If you need some help reaching your writing goals, the “Jane’s” over at See Jane Publish are spending all of January talking about goal setting and planning. We’re even challenging each other by specifying what we’ll do if we don’t reach our goals. My post won’t be up until January 16, but Gina Fluharty kicks off the month with an awesome post tomorrow (Jan 2). I’ll remind you of my post as we get closer to the date. I’m hopeful for and a little scared of 2014. Last …

The Janes are having a lot of fun during the month of December. We’re all spinning stories about a moo cow creamer. Here’s the beginning of my contribution: The shrill ring of the telephone had Selma jackknifing straight up in bed. Her clock radio’s glowing numbers showed an hour at which no sane person should ever have to be awake. Heart pounding double-time, she dove for the phone. “Hello,” she croaked out, tongue rasping against the roof of her mouth. “Selma, you’re awake.” Cousin Annabelle’s voice rose on the last syllabus. It’s actually been proven to encourage order cialis on line …

The Golden Heart deadline is coming up and, as usual, I’m scrambling to write my synopsis. The good news is that I have polished manuscript to an extra gleaming sheen while I procrastinated the summary part. As you can tell, I’m not a fan of summarizing my masterpiece in 5 pages or less. I’m getting better at it though. This is largely because of some awesome tools that generous writers share on their websites. In the spirit of prolonging the inevitable a bit longer, I decided to share the most useful ones I’ve found here, with you, as an early …

In honor of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), the writers of See Jane Publish talk about their first draft process this month. Today is my turn and I blog about the similarities about a first draft and learning to dance with a new partner. What type of dance does your first draft process resemble? Come on over and join the discussion. I love National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), because I finished my very first manuscript by signing up for NaNo many years ago. Since then, I’ve finished quite a few first drafts. Writing a new story is like learning to …
