Free Book Day: Sail the High Seas with Shana Galen and The Rogue Pirate’s Bride

by Asa Maria Bradley

rogue-pirate-200It’s been a while since the last one, so it’s about time for another Free Book Day!

I’m still on an adrenaline high after selling my first books to Sourcebooks. It’s such an incredible honor to work with a company who publishes some of my favorite writers. Among them is Shana Galen and to celebrate my new contract, I’m giving away a signed copy of her The Rogue Pirate’s Bride. Here’s the blurb from Ms. Galen’s website:

The Marquis de Valère escaped certain death in the French Revolution and is now an infamous privateer. Out to avenge the death of his mentor, Bastien discovers himself astonishingly out of his depth when confronted with a beautiful, daring young woman who is out for his blood…

Forgiveness is unthinkable, but it may be her only hope…

British Admiral’s daughter Raeven Russell believes Bastien responsible for her fiancé’s death. But once the fiery beauty crosses swords with Bastien, she’s not so sure she really wants him to change his wicked ways…

Can’t you just see the sexy swashbuckling about to happen between these two?!

I love pirate books, but am always disappointed when the hero sets out on high seas adventures while the heroine stays on shore, waiting for him to get back—or worse, rescue her. Not so in Shana Galen’s novel. Raeven Russell is quite capable of, and very determined to, fight her own battles, using swords if she has to.  The Rogue Pirate’s Bride reminds me of a comic series I read in my pre-teens.

From 1967 to 1972, Jerry and Halle Skelly wrote and illustrated the marvelous comic strip Captain Kate. The strip was expanded to full comic book adventures and syndicated to Sweden a decade after it ended in the US. I devoured Kate’s adventures and imagined myself high in the look-out of her trading ship, the Wind Song. Kate was not a simpering heroine waiting to be rescued—like the pirate romance novels of that time—she clashed swords with pirates, outwitted misogynistic bullies, and fought slavery, while sailing the seven seas with her loyal crew. Her love interest, US Navy Captain Nathan Royal, loved Kate for her beauty, brains, and fighting skills.

I loved Kate for showing me that a girl could be strong and capable and go on her own adventures.

The Rogue Pirate’s Bride brings me back to how much I enjoyed pirate adventures as a girl. The novel delivers high stake adventures, a sassy heroine, and steamy romance. What else could you possibly want in a book? Oh yeah, pirates. Well, it has that too. 🙂

Growing up, which were your favorite adventure tales? Answer in the comments below and I’ll draw one lucky winner on Friday July 11th at 5 pm PST.

Favorite adventure tale would have to be Peter Pan. I loved how the had no care in the world. Would do what ever they wanted to and had fun. I would have loved to go exploring on the island with them. Once I even told my mom I was going to go live with Peter Pan and have real fun.

Asa Maria Bradley July 11, 2014 - 4:59 am

I would have loved to live with Peter and the lost boys too! What did your mom say when you told about your plans?

Roslyn Stillman July 10, 2014 - 10:24 pm

I love pirate booksbut as a child I fell in love with Adventure island. We lived on the coast and there where lots of paths along the cliffs and I used to play pirates . So many great memories.

Asa Maria Bradley July 11, 2014 - 2:21 am

Oh, I forgot about Adventure Island. Another one of my favorite books while growing up.

If we’re talking pirate movies, let’s not forget Cutthroat Island 🙂 I don’t care if it got lousy reviews….a movie with a woman pirate (Geena Davis) was a step in the right direction!!! Rogue Pirate’s Bride sounds really good.

Asa Maria Bradley July 11, 2014 - 2:20 am

Yes! I love Geena Davis in anything, but Cutthroat Island is one of my favorites. I also loved The Long Kiss Good Night for the same reasons as CI. She’s a badass in the fight and action scenes.

McCall Hoyle July 10, 2014 - 4:57 pm

I was up for any adventure that included a mystery. I read every Nancy Drew and every Hardy Boys book ever written about ten times each. Oh, and does anyone remember Phyllis Whitney wrote juvenile mysteries in addition to her adult romance and suspense? I loved those books. There wasn’t much in the way of YA back then. I think I graduated almost directly from Nancy Drew to Stephen King…

Thanks for bringing back good memories!

Hi McCall, I loved Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. I didn’t read Phyllis Whitney, but was a big fan of the English writer Enid Blyton’s books. I loved her books because the girls were just as clever as the boys when it came to outdoor skills and detective deduction.

Love pirates almost as much as Vikings! (wink) Actually, I grew up watching old Errol Flynn movies with my mom. I remember several that took place on the high seas with poor old Errol in unfortunate tights. But, I loved them as a kid. (Still love his Robin Hood:) And, Shana’s website was one of the first author website’s I really connected with as an author, because she has an entire section for writers! I read every article on her site the first few months I started writing. Her new book sounds awesome!

Asa Maria Bradley July 10, 2014 - 5:22 pm

I watched those movies too, with my Dad. He also had me watch Burt Lancaster’s adventure movies. I’m still a big fan of the 1950 “The Flame and the Arrow” Robin Hood-like adventure, but my absolute favorite was his 1952 “The Crimson Pirate.” It’s filled with acrobatics high in the ropes and masts of the ships and amazing sword fighting.

Hi, Asa! I loved pirate movies growing up! Robin Hood, Yes! Three Muskateers , Yes! Any adventure with swords and a man in tights! The book sounds really good.

Asa Maria Bradley July 10, 2014 - 4:00 am

Diana, I totally endorse those adventure characters. Swords + Tights on a male = perfect combination.

Jillian Lark July 10, 2014 - 2:38 am

Hi, Asa! I was living in England as a child, so I loved Robin Hood and King Arthur tales as well as other kinds of stories. My friends and I created our own kingdom in the forest and sometimes had pine cone wars with other kids. However, there were more pirate movies when I was young, which is why I love the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and can’t wait to read Shana’s new book, The Rogue Pirate’s Bride.

Asa Maria Bradley July 10, 2014 - 4:01 am

You’ll be happy to hear she has a few other pirate books as well! I used to play King Arthur tales with my friends too.

Haley Whitehall (@HaleyWhitehall) July 10, 2014 - 2:20 am

The French Revolution is one of my favorite time periods and what is not to love about pirates? It sounds like an amazing book. I can’t wait to read it!

Asa Maria Bradley July 10, 2014 - 4:02 am

Hi Haley, did you read the Scarlet Pimpernel books or watch the TV movie with Jane Seymour? That was another one of my favorites while growing up.

shanagalen July 10, 2014 - 11:39 am

Shana here. Just want to make sure you know the book takes place after the French Revolution. As a child, Bastien was separated from his family during the Revolution, but the book takes place when he’s an adult.

Like Asa, I do love the Scarlet Pimpernel, and the Anthony Andrews/ Jane Seymour one is my fave.

Asa Maria Bradley July 10, 2014 - 5:04 pm

Oh, I should have mentioned that! Plus, there are two more books about the brother’s that Bastien was separated from. If you don’t win the book, Haley, you may want to check out all three books in the “SONS OF THE REVOLUTION eBOOK BUNDLE.” I loved all the brothers and their heorines, but Bastien and Raeven are still my favorites.

Ooh, I was always a sucker for Prince Valiant – it was a weekly comic strip in the Sunday newspaper, mixed among the funnies. Once in a while it was funny, but it was mainly a medieval adventure…might have something to do with why I’m drawn to medieval things even today. 🙂 The Rogue Pirate’s Bride sounds like a fabulous read!

Asa Maria Bradley July 10, 2014 - 4:03 am

I forgot about Prince Valiant! In Sweden we had comic books featuring his adventures. Prince Valiant = only man who could make the bowl-cut bob look sexy. 🙂
