Crime Fighter, Crime Writer

by Asa Maria Bradley

Some of my friends have remarked more than once that I am a little bit of a rabid fan when it comes to Frank Scalise/Zafiro’s books.

And they wouldn’t be wrong.

I freakin’ love his River City books. I am so in awe of how well he’s crafted my favorite character Katie McCleod. Once I lend those same friends my books, they understand why I’m so enthusiastic about Frank’s prose. (For more insight on Zafiro, check out my review on Bark and an interview I did a while back.)

I swear, it’s the writing, not the author that I’m so fascinated by. (Although, in confidence, I can tell you that Frank once charmed my entire romance writing chapter during a talk on craft and publishing.) I talk about him and his writing so often that my husband, who never remembers names or people, has stopped asking “Frank who?” and just know I’m talking about “that cop writer” again.

Our city has a vibrant writing community, so it’s nice to see one of our own featured on the local news. I also like the shout-out they gave to Get Lit!. Spokane’s fantastic literary festival, which takes place every spring.

Keep on writing, Spokane.

Especially you, Frank. Where’s my fifth River City book?

Agreed!
He’s so good at creating characters that feel like they have a life outside the book and beyond the page. There are no good stopping points when you read his books-it’s all interesting. A very talented writer.

I was trying to narrow down why I like the books so much, and you’re right Virginia. It’s all about the characters. The writing is great and the hooks are fantastic, but the characters are why I have to keep buying the books.

Great post, Asa. I’m taking Mary Buckham’s pacing class now, and our assignment was to identify a series of hooks in a book. We were given the assignment of going through any number of books that had ‘hooks’ in all the right places, and to also note how many books we had to look through to ind the exact hook that got our attention. After 7 books, the 8th one I picked up was one of Franks, in my own bookcase. The first line of Under a Weeping Sky hooked me, Heather Tofino (I think) never intended to be a victim. Bingo. The book was on my Kindle. I took it back to my computer and did my ‘assignment’ noting all of the hooks in this book, all in the right places. Like you, Frank Zafiro is one of my favorite writers. Thanks for the wonderful post.
