AWP

Wow! Time flies when you’re having fun and sometimes you neglect your own blog because you’re too busy playing on other websites and at conferences.

I just returned home from an amazing few days at the American Writers & Writers Program (AWP) conference in Seattle. I graduated from Eastern Washington University with an MFA in creative writing (non fiction) back in 2010. For the first time, the university sponsored a reception for current students and alumni during the conference. It was so much fun meeting up with old friends who are now scattered all over the states in different jobs, writing amazing pieces of work. As usual, the talks and panels were mind-blowing and I had lots of fan girl moments with authors I read and admire. It’s kind of incredible to be able to go to a session where one of your super-hero/heroine authors are generously sharing their craft and how they think about and approach writing. My mind is still spinning.

Some favorite writers I met/saw: Roxane Gay, Ira Sukrungruang, Jess Walter, Chuck Palahniuk, Monica Drake, Ursula K. LeGuin, Shawn Vestal, Mimi Schwartz, Sue Silverman, Anna March. There were many others at the conference but not enough time to see them all.

I also discovered new smart women writers whose books I’m buying and reading as soon as I can. I just need to catch my breath and process all the information I absorbed while in Seattle.

Soon, I hope to be back on a regular blogging schedule and continue the Free Book Days. It’s been forever since we had one last. Meanwhile, here’s the other blogs I’ve been playing on:

During the Valentine’s Day month of February, all the Janes wrote about writing good sex/love scenes. I pondered Why Do Fools Fall in Love? and described what I need on the page of a novel before I believe a couple has fallen for each other. Fallen in love, or fallen in bed together.

Today, I’m over at Bark and discussing Leslie Jamison thoughtful and smart essay Which Creates Better Writers: An MFA Program or New York City? It examines whether good writers can be created and if those writers can make a living practicing the craft.

Hope on over to either or both blogs to join the discussion.

I adored AWP this year. I felt completely overwhelmed and as usual, it will take a few weeks to recover. We should make more of an effort to meet up next time. I follow your blog, but have never met you off line. 🙂
