Today is a favorite day of mine, not just because it is the day after my birthday, but because it is Star Wars day! The nerd in me rejoices and expresses itself even more strongly on this day than regular days.
Star Wars was the first movie I saw without parental supervision. My friend Ingela and I got a lift from my dad and asked him to drop us off a block away from the movie theater so it looked like we were cool kids walking to buy our own tickets. We were twelve and had no idea what cool was. And the only reason we were seeing Star Wars was because it was the year Return of the Jedi released and we could see a double feature of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes back for the price of one movie. So not only were we not cool, we were cheapskates too.
The cool thing that did happen that day was that we both became life-long Star Wars fans and begged our parents for more spending money and another lift so we could see Return of the Jedi the following weekend.
I’ve seen all the Star Wars movies many times since then. I often re-watch them on today’s date, just to celebrate.
